Abstract
In der Kultur des klassischen Weimar ist der ‘reisende Engländer’ so etwas wie eine Institution. Hier wird auf Grund des wiedergefundenen Tagebuchs von George Butler, dem späteren Leiter der Harrow School, über dessen Gespräche 1798 und 1801 mit Goethe und Schiller berichtet. Soweit die Äußerungen bekannt waren, werden sie wesentlich ergänzt und berichtigt.
